When I was reading this article, Scherba touched on the differences between a “timeless” photo and a “great” photo, and how sometimes they overlap. In response, I went to paint and made a visual to inspire discussion.

What do you think are the differences between a “great” photo and a “timeless” one? In what ways are they the same?
Tell me what you think!

  1. for me…

timeless: a photo that means a great deal, whether because it captures some meaningful event (such as the photo below) or simply because it helps us remember something we never want to forget.

great: a picture can be a great picture while not necessarily encapsulating some big event. a picture of a sunset can be a fantastic picture, but in the end, it’s just a sunset. if the picture was taken right after your sister’s wedding on the beach, that’d make it a timeless picture, because you’d relate it to that event.

both: both timeless and great pictures hold meaning for the photographer, but i do think that pictures are one or the other. well, i think a great picture is just a great picture, but a timeless photograph can be both.
